Click 'Create image file from files/folders' and the Imgburn menu will appear. Drag your ECM file into the open Imgburn window and it will automatically load into the program. An added bonus is that the new CHD files are also compressed so actually save space too! Download the following zip file and extract it to the folder containing all of your bin, gdi or cue files. Now just run “CUE or GDI to CHD.bat” and it will convert all of your games to CHD. An Intel HEX file must end with an end-of-file (EOF) record.:00000001FF Where 00 is the number of data bytes in the record. 0000 is the address where the data are to be located in memory. The address in end-of-file records is meaningless and is ignored. An address of 0000h is typical. 01 is the record type 01 (an end-of-file record).
What is an ECM file?
Disc image created in the Error Code Modeler (ECM) format; stores the disc image by removing redundant error correction codes and checksums; allows the CD image to be reduced in size for transmission over the Internet; often used for compressing game console disc images.
ECM files are created from disc images such as .BIN, .CDI, .NRG, and .CCD files. Once encoded to the ECM format, the ECM file can then be compressed using .RAR compression or another compression algorithm. The resulting compressed size can be 15-20% smaller than the equivalent full disc compressed image.
To restore the original CD image from a compressed ECM file (e.g., image.nrg.ecm.rar), first decompress the file to a raw ECM file, and then restore the original CD image from the ECM file using the ECM software, which contains a decompression program called unecm.exe.

Description | BIN (Binary files) is a non-text computer file. Data is encoded with binary code instead of text for storage and processing. Some of the coding can be translated or interpreted into text while the rest is for formatting and other useful functional features. Older Microsoft Word documents work in binary. The BIN file extension often refers to CD disk images. Binary data can be translated into plain text to prevent the code from trying to execute functions. This allows the sending, receiving, and downloading of BIN files. Hex editors are very useful for viewing of binary sequences but text editors can be used as well. |
Technical details | Files with the BIN extension usually look like junk when viewed directly with a text editor. Without knowledge of which portion of ASCII code is crucial for the file or which program to open the file in, the files are not very useful. These files often contain executable code and data programs that are required by various OS’s for the starting of a program. Binary digits (bits) are grouped in 8-character groups and used to interpret something other than numbers and letters by different programs. This allows images, text, sound, and other files (compressed) to be found in a BIN file. Headers can contain metadata used by the program to interpret data and identify format. |
